The 6th graders have begun reading the novel Touching Spirit
Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. It is about a young boy who finds himself in
trouble and learns to take responsibility for his actions by being
banished on a remote island in Alaska. They are also learning about
another culture, the Tlingit Indians, who live in Alaska. While
reading the novel, they have been using their Writer’s Journals to
express their feelings and thoughts about the events that are
happening.
They have also been learning about persuasion and persuasive
techniques that are found throughout advertising. They have learned
that there are many different persuasive techniques that are used.
They will be working on writing their own persuasive arguments at a
later date.
