Elementary: First Grade

Current Topics
The first graders are learning to tell time by the hour and half-hour
in Math. They are learning to tell time on an analog and a digital
clock. In Science, we are studying the three states of matter
(solid, liquid, and gas) and characteristics of living and non-living
objects. In Social Studies, we are reading about children around the
world, we are finding out that we are similar in some ways but
different in others. In Reading, we will begin Lesson 9 story called
'Plants Can't Jump'. Some of the skills practiced in this lesson are
short vowel u sound, fluency, vocabulary, and writing.
Highlights
The 100th day of school was Jan. 22, 2009. Some of the activities
that we did were making a necklace with 100 Fruit Loops; designing
paper glasses that had lenses in the shape of 100; counting to 100 by
ones, twos, fives, and tens; having an indoor picnic; and listening
to a story about the 100th day of school.
Upcoming Event
Our Valentine Party will be Thurs, Feb. 12, 2009, at 1:45 p.m.
Students may bring their Valentine cards a couple days before the
party. We will be decorating our Valentine sacks on Fri., Feb. 6,
2009.
Semester Goal
One of our math semester goals is to pass all 26 addition rocket
tests. Many of the students enjoy doing these math timed tests.
They chart their own progress by coloring a space on a rocket after
correctly answering 22 facts in one minute.
