Mrs. Barker - 5th Grade
October 22, 2008
It’s hard to believe that this is the last week of the 1st quarter. Mrs. Barker’s class is excited about what has been accomplished during these first 9 weeks.
In Math they have learned about place values, exponents, negative numbers, using decimals in mathematical problems, addition, subtraction, equations, and variables. We are just beginning to take an in depth look at multiplication.
We have focused on novels in our Reading class. The first novel we studied was Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. We then had a lot of fun working with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Activities included making a triple venn diagram comparing the novel to both movies, creating a project at home that are on display in the hallway, and typing a chocolate recipe in keyboarding. We are now looking forward to compiling the recipes into a cookbook and having a tasting party. To finish off the unit we will be traveling to the Midwest Theatre in Scottsbluff for the children’s theater production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.
Take a look at our wonderful “Charlie Projects”!

We have been working on the Scientific Method this quarter in Science. This was completed this week when we took the State on-line test. We will be starting work on microscopes and cells next week. Beware, the room will smell like onions for a couple o days!
Art has been a highlight of the quarter for many students in 5A. We were able to design and color a geometric shape, and work on complimentary colors and shades. The biggest project we undertook was making class t-shirts by tie-dying. It was a bit messy but lots of fun and very exciting results.
We welcome visitors to our classroom any time so feel free to come and see what we are up to!
