Elementary: First Grade

First Grade News

Reading
First graders will be beginning the story called 'Big Rigs.' Some of
the skill for this story are short i sound, fluency, classifying and
categorizing, naming parts of a sentence, punctuation and
summarizing.

Math
Addition and subtraction facts to 6 is our current skill in math. We
are learning how addition and subtraction are related. some of the
strategies we use to add and subtract are number lines, drawing
pictures, and using manipulatives.

 Science
We are studying rocks in science. We've learned some of the ways how
big rocks become little rocks and tools of a geologist. We will be
learning what can be found under our feet and how strong ice is.

 Highlight
On Sept. 12, 2008, all first graders went on a field trip to the
Wildcat Hills. We learned about bird banding, migration, bird
habitats, bird beaks, and feeding habits. One of our favorite parts
was going on a scavenger hunt.

Looking Forward
Johnny Appleseed's birthday is Sept. 26. We will be doing activities
centered around apples. These activities, will include the Johnny
Appleseed story, apple art, and tasting a variety of apples.
